Envato, the giant company behind ThemeForest and CodeCanyon have recently made huge change to its popular stock photo marketplace, PhotoDune.
Previously users of the service (myself included) could pick up some excellent images for a little as $1 – albeit at a reduced resolution (you can pay more for higher resolutions as and when you need them), however in what can only be described as a bold move, they have scrapped this tried, tested and beloved setup and now only offer images at there highest resolution, meaning users are now facing costs increases ranging from 500-900%.
The move is of course Envato’s attempt to force users to subscribe to there controversial Elements platform – a subscription based service, however many, many users have expressed outrage over on the official forum announcement thread.
Envato’s lacklustre stance on appeasing the army of bemused PhotoDune customers is really summed up in this quote from an Envato minion, taken from the thread linked above –
For our customers, we fully realise that this move will represent a change to the experience on PhotoDune. Should this change mean that you choose to take your business elsewhere, we fully respect your decision and we genuinely thank you for all of your support of both us and our photographers.
Envato’s shrugging off of these concerns of course is quite telling of how they handle there customers, so it seems a mass exodus to a new source of photos is needed for many.
